Hot Stuff - De 69 Heetste Liedjes

Op de redactietafel lagen de Britse muziekbladen die we onderweg in de kiosk hadden gescoord: de laatste Q met The Ultimate Playlist – 1001 Songs en de nieuwe Mojo met The 70 Best Soul Albums Of The ’70s. Zo bleek maar weer eens de kracht van het getal: zet een paar cijfers in combinatie met een of andere onderwerp op het omslag en de losse verkoop van willekeurig welk tijdschrift vaart er wel bij. Geen wonder dat het kwartje gelijk viel toen het zesde nummer van de twaalfde jaargang tevens de negenenzestigste editie van Heaven bleek. Want soixante-neuf, dat vraagt er natuurlijk om – vandaar: De 69 Heetste Liedjes. Een avondje in het geheugen graven plus een middagje googlen, aangevuld met wat ons de navolgende weken op onbewaakte momenten nog te binnen wilde schieten, leverden alles bij elkaar toch al gauw zo’n honderd liedjes op. De definitieve selectie moest in alle opzichten zo breed mogelijk: van oud tot nieuw, van jong tot oud, van blues tot pop, van soul tot metal, van hiphop tot folk, van country tot reggae, van obscuur tot overbekend, van dubbelzinnig tot expliciet, van geestig tot grofgebekt, van woorden tot daden, van gratis tot betaald, van vertwijfeld tot uitdagend, van teder tot masochistisch, van vreugdeloos tot extatisch, van solo tot massaal, van oraal tot anaal – enfin, vul het zelf verder maar aan. Met enige bijkomende criteria wisten we de schifting aanzienlijk te vergemakkelijken. Zo zou elke artiest of groep slechts met één nummer in de eindlijst komen te staan, waarbij zelfs geilneef Prince geen uitzondering op de regel mocht vormen. Voorts mocht de titel niet terugkeren in de geciteerde tekstregel, die juist iets moest blootleggen over de diepere inhoud. En tot slot diende elk liedje te klinken als een klok, want als de muziek niet deugt, dan houdt het uiteraard gelijk op. Overbodig te vermelden ten slotte dat we onszelf de nodige aangename uurtjes hebben weten te bezorgen, want zoals iedereen weet: a dirty mind is a joy forever.
